directed by Mizue Furui Documentary /95” /2016/Japan Eiko Kanno is a 79 year old grandmother whose life has been completely changed by the nuclear disaster in Fukushima. Her life should have been with her grandchildren but because of the disaster which caused her entire village of Iitate to be evacuated. She now lives by herself in temporary housing. Yoshiko Kanno and her extended family are very important to her changed life. Yoshiko Kanno lost her parents in the evacuation and she found herself living next door to Eiko Kanno. They entertain themselves by telling jokes to each other like a comedic duo. They now live together. Eiko’s motto in life is to produce her own food. She grows a variety of vegetables; tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, soy-beans, and Japanese radish. Pickled turnips, glutinous rice balls with sweet red bean paste, and carrots with sesame sauce are on the table. They smile and declare how delicious the food is. In order to uphold their native food culture, they often visit other areas to teach others how to make traditional food like “miso” (soy bean paste), and “Shimi mochi”(dry rice cake). Iitate village is now slowly becoming decontaminated. There is still, however, high levels of radiation and a radically altered landscape. They continue to live with uncertainty in their future with tears and laughter
